Photomontage was considered important in advertising because creating communication through photo could be very valuable and strengthen it. Herbert Matter, a Swiss photographer and designer, fully understood the new methods of the modern movement in visual organization and collage and montage technologies and applied this understanding photography and graphic design of the Swiss international style. His posters using montage, creative changes in size, and effective combination of typography and imagery were made. Photographic images become pictorial symbols out of their usual communications and were combined in a new ratio.
The main hypothesis is that it is possible that the role of photography as a graphic messenger was expanded by Herbert Matter in the posters of the Swiss international style and the sub-hypothesis that the designers of this style didn’t use photos as an advertising tool in their artworks.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of Herbert Matter on the poster making of the Swiss international style and also to investigate the use of photographs in the posters of this style.
The research method is descriptive-analytical and data collection is done by library method and using documentary and the recorded visual information is observed.
According to the results, it can be said that other Swiss style designers are influenced by Herbert Matter is such a way that 80% of the examined works are highly influenced by Herbert Matter.
Based on this, the role of photography as a graphic massaging tool was expanded by Herbert Matter, a Swiss photographer and designer, and all the designers of the Swiss international style did not use photography as an advertising tool, but rather as a symbol or impactful and messenger effects in their works.
